What pushes the price up
- Moving things round. Moving the toilet, shower or bath means new pipework and drainage. Checkatrade and Which? both say keeping the layout is one of the best ways to control cost.1,3
- Tiling. Floor-to-ceiling, large-format or patterned tiles take longer to lay.1
- The suite you choose. A toilet can cost from about £150 to £800, depending on whether it is close-coupled or a concealed wall-hung design.2
- Electrics. New lighting, an extractor fan or a shaver point needs a qualified electrician.
- What is behind the walls. Older homes often hide damaged plaster, leaks or old pipes. Checkatrade suggests keeping 10–15% aside for this.1
- Waste removal. Check whether the skip is in the price.
What a cowboy quote looks like
- One price with no breakdown, so you cannot see whether removal, plumbing, electrics, tiling and waste are included.
- Far below the other quotes with no explanation. Ask what has been left out.
- No mention of who does the electrics, or no certificate offered at the end.
- A big cash deposit up front, or pressure to sign today for a "special price".
- No written quote, no address and no insurance details.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is the quote itemised: removal, plumbing, electrics, tiling, plastering, waste?
- Who supplies the suite and tiles, and is there a handling charge if I buy them?
- Will an electrician registered with a scheme such as NICEIC do the electrics, and will I get a certificate?
- What happens to the price if you find rot or leaks once the room is stripped?
- How long will I be without a working toilet or shower?
- What guarantee do you give on the work?
How long it takes
Checkatrade says a typical bathroom installation takes about 5 to 10 days.1 Allow longer if pipework moves, walls are re-plastered or tiles have to dry. Ask when the toilet and shower will be out of action.
